Wavetronix LLC, Lindon, Utah, recently announced that the deployment of more than 1,100 SmartSensors along the Florida Turnpike is nearing completion. Company officials call this one of the largest sensor deployments in ITS history, creating one of the largest continuous detection corridors in the United States.

The Florida Turnpike (State Road 91) is a 312-mile long toll corridor that stretches from Florida City in Miami-Dade County to Wildwood in Sumter County. SmartSensors are being installed every one-third- to one-half-mile to collect real-time vehicle volume, occupancy and average speed data as part of a statewide ITS initiative. The turnpike deployments are a combination of six separate projects that are being overseen by three different contractors.

The Florida Turnpike projects bring the total number of SmartSensors deployed in Florida to over 2,000, making Florida the state with the greatest number of active SmartSensor installations.
