Kouchibouguac is a Mi’kmaq word meaning “river of long tides.” The Rte. 117 Rehabilitation project had a long list of solutions. Four rehabilitation projects were presented to the Parks Canada Agency, and the chosen method was full-depth reconstruction. By maintaining the existing roadway alignment with a widened roadway section, the impacts on the existing landscape, sensitive ecosystem, park users and the environmental footprint were limited. Culvert design at 64 crossings provided for the accommodation of fish passage at 32 locations. Four amphibian crossings also were included.
