On June 10, the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) broke ground on the U.S.-30 Grand Island West project. The project aims to expand the highway and realign existing roads.
The project focuses on improving safety, connectivity, and economic development in the region. It was made possible through the Build Nebraska Act and the Transportation Innovation Act.
The Build Nebraska Act and Transportation Innovation Act has helped critical transportation projects in the state get funded.
“Safety is at the forefront of this project, ensuring that both our residents and visitors can travel with greater peace of mind. The improvements will reduce congestion and the risk of accidents, making our roads safer for everyone.” said Grand Island mayor Roger Steele.
"The legislature's support of transportation is incredibly important. Without their support, we wouldn't be out here today," said Vicki Kramer, the NDOT director.
Kramer also said the expansion will help solve roadway congestion and makes the highway safer for drivers.
According to Wes Wahlgren, the division engineer for NDOT District 4, the expansion is expected to be completed within the next two years, and that construction is well underway.
According to Steele, the project will cost an estimated $33 million.
