Work has begun on the $29 million project to widen Utica-Sellersburg Road and Charlestown Pike in Jeffersonville, Ind.

Construction is part of a project to widen and improve Charlestown Pike from Holmans Lane to Salem-Noble Road, as well as Utica-Sellersburg Road from Charlestown Pike to State Road 62.

“We're going to start with moving some water line out of the way so we can get the road widened. We'll be adding curb and gutter, we'll be adding some sidewalk on this section,” said Jeffersonville City Engineer Andy Crouch.

Crews are expected to finish installing the water lines and pipes in October.

The project aims to add sidewalks to Charlestown Pike and Utica-Sellersburg Road. Curbs, gutters, and street lighting will also be added to the roads. There are 14 subdivisions on a three-mile stretch along Charlestown Road, according to Mayor Mike Moore.

"They need entrances, de-acceleration lanes, they need lighting, there are a lot of kids who need sidewalks," Moore said.

The project was originally estimated to be $19 million, but due to inflation, the project cost rose to $29 million. Moore said that Jeffersonville has the money for the project thanks to taxes paid by new businesses.
