Santa Fe County Finishes Connecting Road Project

The community has new roundabouts, bike lanes and water lines

After decades of talk, Santa Fe County is opening major connecting roads that haven’t been deployed for the public. The Northeast/Southeast Connector Roads Projects cuts roadways through areas that have yet to be developed in New Mexico.

“This is the biggest road project that the county has ever done before,” said Curt Temple, Santa Fe County’s Project’s Section Manager.

The community college district will see six new roundabouts, approximately eight miles of bike lanes, and approximately 8,000 feet of critical new water lines after nearly two years of construction.

The $25 million project came in on time and under budget, according to Santa Fe County.

“It’s so much faster people are telling me that it’s 10 minutes faster to get into town,” said Hank Hughes, Santa Fe County Commissioner District 5.

Crews will be putting the finishing touches on the roundabout in the coming weeks with some solar lighting, according to Santa Fe County.

Santa Fe Community College President Becky Rowley said the project will have big impacts for the school and the surrounding community.

“We’re part of a burgeoning community. There’s a large housing development that’s being developed off Richards right now. The road that connects to Presbyterian Hospital goes all the way out to Cerillos. It’s just all better connected,” said Rowley.
