Alabama DOT to Begin Final Phase of Gordo Bypass

Oct. 9, 2024
Construction is expected to last two years

Next week, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) will begin the final phase of the Gordo Bypass. The project will improve safety, mobility and commerce in the state.

The project aims to realign U.S. Route 82 from the northwest city limits of Gordo to east of the Tuscaloosa County line. Once finished, U.S.-82 will be a four-lane corridor stretching from the Mississippi state line to Tuscaloosa.

The final phase of the project is exected to begin on Oct. 15 and will continue for approximately two years.

Phase one was completed last year. It focused on earth-moving acitvities, drainage and bridge construction. The final phase will focus on the base and pavement.

The final phase of the project was scheduled for bid in May, but due to a newspaper error, the advertisement was not published. ALDOT must run the bid advertisement twice before the opening bid, according to state law.

S.T. Bunn Construction Company was awarded the $45.59 million contract with the project funded 80% by the federal government and 20% by the state.
