The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) announced the reopening of State Route 81, reconnecting Washington and Unicoi counties for the first time since Hurricane Helene.
The 1.1-mile stretch of highway underwent significant reconstruction, including guardrail installation, grade work, rock buttress construction and final surface paving.
The reopening eliminates a detour that forced more than 5,400 motorists to drive an extra hour daily.
“This is a critical roadway for local residents, and its reopening marks a major milestone in our recovery efforts,” a TDOT spokesperson said.
Hurricane Helene, which struck in September 2024, caused severe damage to roads across East Tennessee, initially closing 49 sections of state and local routes. Of those, 43 have now been restored.
Baker’s Construction Services, Inc., completed the project ahead of schedule. The company expressed gratitude for its team in a statement, crediting the successful completion to the dedication of its operators, truck drivers, survey crew and subcontractors.
Motorists are advised to use caution, as maintenance work is ongoing, and crews may still be present along the roadway.
TDOT continues efforts to repair the remaining storm-damaged roads, prioritizing safety and accessibility for Tennessee drivers, it said.
