Crews are assessing damage to the roadway caused by Hurricane Helene

North Carolina’s scenic artery, Blue Ridge Parkway, has been closed indefinitely due to damage from Hurricane Helene, the National Park Service reported on Wednesday.

The National Park Service closed Blue Ridge Parkway on Sept. 29 from milepost 271 to milepost 469 at the Virginia State Line.

Initially, two sections of the parkway were closed ahead of the storm, but the entirety was shut down on Saturday.

The National Park Service is continuing to assess the damage from Hurricane Helene. There are 99 National Park Service employees from 22 states working with Blue Ridge Parkway staff on its recovery.

The National Park Service deployed the Eastern Incident Management Team which brings skills and resources to support the parkway with employee emergency needs, emergency stabilization of park resources and damage assessments.

The route begins in Shenandoah National Park and ends in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

There is no reopening date for any part of the parkway.
