Massachusetts Highways Getting Wrong-Way Detection Systems
Massachusetts highways are about to become a little more safer. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has begun installing wrong-way detection systems on state highways.
Officials will be shutting down lanes in both directions on major highways in Burlington, Danvers, Plymouth and Webster between 10 P.M. and 4 A.M. through Friday.
This is part of a $2.6 million pilot program project consisting of installing Wrong-Way Vehicle Detection Systems at 16 ramp locations throughout Massachusetts.
According to AAA's Foundation for Traffic Safety, there was an average of 500 deaths per year nationwide due to wrong-way crashes between 2015 and 2018.
Temporary traffic restrictions will be implemented at the following locations:
- Bernardston: I-91 northbound and southbound, exit 50 at Route 10
- Burlington: I-95 northbound and southbound, exit 50B at Middlesex Turnpike
- Danvers: Route 128 northbound and southbound, exit 43 at Route 62
- Plymouth: Route 3 northbound and southbound, exit 13 at Long Pond Road
- Webster: I-395 northbound and southbound, exit 1 at Route 193
The project is currently expected to be completed in the spring.
