Workers urge drivers to slow down following two crashes

Two accidents this week in the Midwest have left highway patrols and construction workers urging drivers to slow down and pay attention when in work zones.

On Monday, a semi-truck lost control in a work zone and crashed into a work truck around 12:30 p.m. in Delhi Township, Mich. Crews were working in a construction zone on southbound U.S. Route127 when the truck lost control and left the roadway.

The truck was pulling two gravel haulers, and one of them hit a parked truck that two construction workers were sitting in, according to police.

The passenger received minor injuries, and the truck driver was cited for careless driving in a construction zone.

On Wednesday, two people were killed in a crash on Capitol Drive near State Trunk Highway 164, in Pewaukee, Wis. A pickup truck collided with another vehicle, killing the driver, and striking two construction workers. One worker later died.

According to reports, officials believe the pickup driver may have suffered a medical emergency as he was driving westbound on Capitol Drive around 9:30 a.m.

According to police, the driver struck a car, resulting in the death of a 76-yeaar-old woman. After, he struck construction workers, ages 46 and 47.

“(The driver) veered into the coned-off construction area and hit two concrete workers,” Pewaukee Assistant Fire Chief Mark Hoppe said.

The 46-year-old worker was later pronounced dead in the hospital with the 47-year-old worker sustaining serious injuries. The driver had no life-threatening injuries.
