A road worker died Wednesday after he was struck by a car on Interstate 75 in Detroit.
The crash happened around 1:40 p.m. on southbound I-75 near Springwells, according to police. The worker, identified as Jeff McLeod, was setting a road flare between construction vehicles when a car driven by a 71-year-old entered the right lane and struck the worker.
The 53-year-old road worker was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries, police confirmed yesterday.
There is no word on what caused the driver to hit McLeod, but Diane Cross from the Michigan Department of Transportation said many crashes involving road workers are due to drivers not paying attention.
“Those folks on the side of the road are just trying to do their job," said Cross. "You’re trying to get home, they want to get home too so anybody who works not the side of the word is always super cautious and you’re just praying that people are going to do the right thing.”
"We want to remind drivers to move over when they see construction vehicles on the side or in the roadway working," said Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw. "The suspect that struck the worker stopped on scene after the crash. After the investigation is completed, an investigator's report will be submitted to the prosecutor's office."
