ROADS/BRIDGES: TxDOT to spend $1.27B to expand freeways & tollways

Jan. 6, 2016

TxDOT has $1.27 billion worth of road projects slated for 2016 in the Houston area

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has $1.27 billion projects in the works in the Houston area, spanning eight counties.

One of those is the Grand Parkway, where construction continues to progress. The project requires installing 3,802 concrete beams and pouring 121 bridge decks.  Contractor Zachry-Odebrecht Parkway Builders recently completed installing all the beams and bridge decks stretching the 38-mile roadway.

Segments F- G of the Grand Parkway will be a controlled-access parkway with four lanes, two lanes each direction and intermittent frontage roads. These two segments of the Grand Parkway connect the communities of Cypress, Spring and New Caney in the northwest Houston region.

Meanwhile, contract negotiations are bogging down the addition of toll lanes to Texas State Highway 288, an $800 million project that is the area's first public-private partnership between TxDOT and Blueridge Transportation Group.

Construction work includes building interchanges where the 288 toll road connects to the Sam Houston Tollway and Loop 610.

Adding to the surge of Houston-area roads project, the Harris County Toll Road Authority is finalizing a $200 million project to widen the Sam Houston Tollway between Texas 288 and Interstate 45. The widening will expand the tollway to four lanes in each direction — from two lanes in each direction — and add an inside shoulder.
