Active traffic management signage debuts in Las Vegas

Signage goes live today on U.S. 95 near the Spaghetti Bowl

Downtown Las Vegas is one of the most congested urban areas in the nation. But Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) officials hope to crack the traffic crunch with a series of digital active traffic management signs, which are set to go live today.

Some 300,000 vehicles travel through the U.S. 95 interchange in downtown Sin City, and NDOT is banking on these new signs to reduce crashes and alleviate congestion with live updates.

The first six signs are going live as NDOT gears up for its “Main Event,” which marks the third round of major traffic lane and freeway ramp closures associated with Project Neon, the $1 billion plan to widen I-15 between Sahara Avenue and the Spaghetti Bowl. In total, 42 electronic signs will be erected along I-15 and U.S. 95 by the time construction wraps up in July 2019, spokesman Tony Illia told the Review-Journal. Spaced approximately a half-mile apart from each other, the displays will relay real-time information about ongoing detours, accidents, lane closures, and other traffic hazards.
