In an effort to combat rising traffic fatalities in Hawaii, state and local organizations are hosting multiple traffic safety events aimed at promoting responsible driving habits.
The Hawaii Department of Education, DTRIC Insurance, and Par Hawaii have partnered to present Operation Driver Excellence, a hands-on traffic safety event set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, at Waipahu High School.
High school students and their parents will have the opportunity to navigate specially designed driving courses in their own vehicles under the supervision of certified driver education instructors.
The courses are designed to teach essential safe driving techniques. Additionally, a traffic safety fair will feature more than 20 exhibitors offering driving-related products and services. Keynote presentations will cover topics such as drowsy driving and proper interactions with law enforcement during traffic stops.
Meanwhile, the Hawaii Police Department’s Kona Community Policing Section is collaborating with community members to conduct a sign-waving event in North Kona. This initiative, part of the department’s Community-Traffic Awareness Partnership (C-TAP) program, aims to raise awareness about reckless driving, speeding, and impaired driving.
Volunteers will hold signs warning motorists about the dangers of speeding, and a “Speed Board” display will provide real-time speed readings. Police will conduct follow-up enforcement in the coming weeks.
With traffic fatalities up 80% compared to last year, officials stress the importance of these initiatives in promoting road safety and reducing preventable accidents.
