The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has launched a system of full-color dynamic message signs (DMS) across El Paso to provide drivers with real-time travel information and route comparisons.
Lauren Macias-Cervantes, TxDOT spokesperson said the signs display both travel times and comparative travel times, helping motorists select the fastest route. The system has been in place for over a year, with comparative travel times added in January.
Routes like Loop 375 often appear longer but may offer faster travel than more congested highways such as Interstate 10, making the new signs especially helpful for commuters.
As National Work Zone Awareness Week approaches, TxDOT is also spotlighting work zone safety. In 2024, nearly 28,000 crashes occurred in Texas work zones, resulting in 215 deaths—a 12% increase from the previous year, according to TxDOT. Most victims were drivers or passengers.
TxDOT reminds motorists that fines double in work zones when workers are present. Drivers are urged to slow down, stay alert, avoid tailgating, and allow extra travel time.
The agency also emphasizes compliance with the Move Over or Slow Down law, which requires drivers to change lanes or reduce speed when approaching vehicles with flashing lights.
