Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently announced in a press conference that the U.S. House will soon be rolling out significant transportation infrastructure legislation.
"It’s pretty exciting," Speaker Pelosi said in the press conference on Capitol Hill. "It is something we talked about during the campaign. It is something that the President talked about as a priority during the campaign."
According to a report from Transport Topics, the speaker has indicated that the transportation policy measure would include provisions pertaining to climate change. Speaker Pelosi also indicated that the infrastructure legislation—led by the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, headed by Chairman Peter DeFazio, who has yet to announce a release date for the bill—would be announced later this month.
The legislation would serve as an update to the five-year FAST Act passed in 2015, which expires in September of this year.
In July 2019, the Senate Environment & Public Works (EPW) Committee passed its own five-year infrastructure measure, titled the America’s Transportation Infrastructure Act, which would authorize $287 billion in state highway spending authority for FY 2021-2025.
Earlier last year, Congressional Democratic leadership met with President Trump to discuss infrastructure legislation, where a $2T package was agreed upon, though the specifics for how to pay for such a plan were not discussed. And last month, Congress passed an FY 2020 spending package that included $86.2 billion dedicated to transportation funding for the U.S. DOT.
