The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is set to modernize its Driver Services operations this summer with a new software system that promises greater efficiency and more online access for residents.
The nearly $20 million project replaces WYDOT’s Revenue Information System (RIS), a 1986-era platform used to issue licenses, manage driving records and coordinate with law enforcement agencies. RIS currently helps the department serve more than 1,000 people per day but has grown difficult to maintain.
“RIS is outdated, and it’s become almost impossible for our IT team to maintain it,” said Misty Zimmerman, Driver Services program manager, in a statement. “Our new software, MAX, will be much more efficient for Driver Services employees and for the citizens of Wyoming.”
Developed by IT firms Kyndryl and AstreaX—who recently collaborated on a similar system in Arizona—the new platform includes a public-facing component called oneWYO. The online portal will allow residents to renew licenses, schedule driving tests and order driving records from home.
Officials expect MAX and oneWYO to reduce in-person wait times and provide more convenience for users.
“We all know the stereotypes commonly associated with visiting ‘the DMV,’” Zimmerman said. “MAX and oneWYO are our latest tools to fight those stereotypes in Wyoming.”
The system is expected to go live later this summer.
