The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has issued a request for proposal to help the agency research open system tolling.
The 2017 Oregon Legislature directed ODOT to relieve congestion and generate revenue through tolling on I-5 and I-205 in the Portland Metro area.
ODOT is interested in researching an open toll system that would allow several connected car companies to bundle tolling with other services such as by-the-mile insurance, road assistance, parking, engine diagnostics and more.
The goal, according to ODOT officials, is that drivers will be able to use technology already available in their vehicles to pay tolls.
To that end, ODOT is looking for a consultant to research how an open tolling system would work, and compare costs, risks and implementation timelines against a conventional tolling system.
