Travelers near Broken Bow and Merna may have noticed the Nebraska Department of Transportation’s (NDOT) dynamic message signs for some time, but the signs have only recently been activated for public use.
Positioned along Highway 2 near Broken Bow and State Highway 92 near Merna, the signs serve as an intermediate option between large overhead message boards on Interstate 80 and smaller, portable devices.
These digital signs aim to keep motorists informed about road conditions, closures, and other critical travel updates.
“This is essentially an evolution of how we communicate with the traveling public,” said Roger Klasna, NDOT’s District operations and maintenance manager. “Highway 2 is a vital corridor in Nebraska, and these signs help travelers prepare for potential hazards.”
The newly activated signs are among fewer than ten of their kind in the state. Their placement was strategic, given Broken Bow’s central location and State Highway 92’s history of winter weather challenges.
Messages displayed on the signs vary depending on current conditions. They can alert drivers to car accidents, wildfires, hazardous winter weather, or other incidents that may affect travel.
Officials say the signs have already proven effective, and NDOT plans to expand their use across Nebraska in the future.
