TRAFFIC STUDY: TXDOT names 2012's 100 Most Congested Roadways

A 3.7-mile section of I-35W in Fort Worth, Texas, sat at the top of the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TXDOT) annual 100 Most Congested Roadways list for 2012, released last week. According to the report, drivers spent more than 2 million hours traveling this small section of highway.

The list is compiled by TXDOT and the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, which also releases the Congested Corridors Report annually. Data for the 100 Most Congested Roadways comes from the department as well as private research company INRIX.

This year’s report found that motorists lost more than 137 million hours to traffic delays. What’s more, 40% of those delays took place on the top 20 roadways. The total economic cost of fuel consumed in that time was nearly $3 billion.

The list encompasses all roads in the state of Texas regardless of the agency that built or maintains them. City streets and non-state-operated toll roads are also included.
