Macomb County, Mich., opened the $13.5 million Macomb County Communications and Technology Center (COMTEC) Dec. 20. It is located adjacent to the county Department of Roads along Groesbeck Highway.
COMTEC features a 20- x 50-ft wall that holds 54- x 70-in. monitors that can display weather, GPS mapping, television stations, siren alert, computer displays, videoconferencing and 38 Road Department and Michigan DOT intersection cameras, which allow personnel to monitor and adjust traffic signals.
The center houses 14 dispatch workstations and services the Macomb County Sheriff Department and Clinton Township and Sterling Heights police departments. The facility can hold 11 additional stations.
COMTEC is planning on incorporating live feeds from command vehicles, schools and private business, while the director of the Macomb County Department of Roads hopes to monitor up to 300 intersections within two years.
