Infrastructure Insider Web Event Series On-Demand: Winter Maintenance
The Liquids Train is Leaving the Station: Are You on Board?
The use of liquids for anti-icing and de-icing is catching hold in a major way the past 3 years. It’s no longer a matter of if, but when you will need to add them to your snow and ice management toolbox. Higher levels of safety, lower cost and lower chloride emissions for our environment, what’s not to love? But you can’t necessarily flip a switch and implement a liquids program overnight. In this presentation, Jordan will share how to ramp up infrastructure and revise your approach to implement liquids in a consistent and methodical manner.
In this webinar, you'll learn to:
- Understanding the concept of liquids as both a pre and post treat application
- Understanding the cost and environment impact of liquid use
- Understanding how to “sell” liquids as a contractor or to promote the use of liquids as a public service
- Understanding how to build and maintain liquid equipment and infrastructure
- Understanding where the world of salt and chlorides is headed in the next 10 years, and why

Development of An Intelligent Snowplow
Automation has been a growing industry for a few decades in the US and even longer in other countries around the world. As automation proved its potential in manufacturing, agriculture and healthcare, many DOTs including the Indiana Department of Transportation began to reflect on their own operations in an attempt to understand where this same technology could be implemented. Purdue and INDOT began to pursue the automation of anti-icing and de-icing operations with a focus on increasing safety, quality and productivity. Considering the high cost and potential for disruptions to the road network, Winter operations was the perfect fit this idea. Over a period of two years, they partnered with several industry leading businesses to develop a cost-effective method of automating brine and salt applications. This presentation will discuss the research and steps it took to automate those processes as well as next steps and future goals of the program.
In this webinar, you’ll learn to:
- Technology transfer/inspiration from other industries.
- Small-scale prototype build.
- Scaled-up brine tanker build.
- Automating granular application.
- Next steps.
