As crews work on an overlay project at 29th and Topeka Blvd. in Topeka, Kan., drivers are urged to avoid using a nearby parking lot to bypass the work.
According to a report from KSNT News, the city of Topeka has received several reports of cars driving through parking lots to avoid the work going on at the intersection. The city confirms the act of driving through parking lots, or any private property, to avoid road work is illegal.
The city warned violators could be fined $100 plus court fees.
The city said in addition to being dangerous, it’s illegal.
“It is illegal to bypass on private property,” a city spokesman said. “That is because it puts our construction workers as well as the public at risk because people are not expecting to have traffic coming through.”
The project is expected to be finished by June 14. Detours are set up to guide drivers around the work until then, you can see those listed below:
- Westbound 29th St. – from 29th St. and Kansas Ave., south on Kansas Ave. to 37th St., then west to Burlingame Rd., then north to 29th St.
- Eastbound 29th St. – from 29th St. and Burlingame Rd., south on Burlingame Rd. to 37th St., then east to Kansas Ave., then north to 29th St.
- Northbound Topeka Blvd. – from 37th St. and Topeka Blvd., east on 37th St. to Kansas Ave., then north to 21st St., then west to Topeka Blvd.
- Southbound Topeka Blvd. – from 21st St. and Topeka Blvd., east on 21st St. to Kansas Ave., then south to 37th St., then west to Topeka Blvd.
