The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is enforcing speed in work zones with a new program. The Indiana Safe Zones program will be deploying cameras in construction zones to keep drivers and construction crews safe.
Cameras will be taking pictures of the license plates of cars going 11 miles over the posted speed limit in a current Interstate 70 construction zone between mile markers 95-105.
For the first violation, drivers will get a warning. For the second violation, drivers will get a $75 fine in the mail. Every infraction after will be a $150 fine.
Workers must be present at the worksite for the violations to be valid, according to INDOT.
The program was approved by state lawmakers last year and will officially begin on Aug. 14 in Hancock County. During the pre-enforcement warning period no violations will be issued. However, offending drivers will receive courtesy warnings.
These programs are proven to significantly improve work zone safety, says INDOT.
INDOT plans to announce three more work sites with cameras later this year. The transportation agency will provide annual reports to lawmakers about the project over the next five years.
“There will be continued conversations around the topic, around the program and there is potential for it to become a permanent program,” INDOT Strategic Communications Director Natalie Garrett said.
