Connections and Closures

Motorists in North Carolina must take detours for road projects

As construction season kicks into gear, so do the road closures. Throughout the country, detours will help motorists reach their desired destinations, and North Carolina has two examples of how road crews set up these alternate routes.

In Onslow County, Blue Creek Road will be closed for a few days while crews from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) replace a drainage pipe.

Crews began working on the project at 8 a.m. today. The road is expected to reopen by 5 p.m. on May 1.

According to officials, traffic will be detoured onto Highway 24 and Pony Farm Road, allowing access to either side of the closure.

On Interstate 40 in North Carolina, there have been unexpected delays to the weekend construction that was expected to finish today.

A contractor for NCDOT had issues with the last batch of latex-modified concrete applied early Monday morning, a news release said.

Initially, the plans called for completion of the project by 6 a.m. today. Now the work will be continued throughout Monday.

The work is now slated to be finished by 6 a.m. tomorrow.

Crews have closed I-40 West from Hendersonville Road (Exit 50) to Interstate-26 (Exit 46A) for repairs.

The weekend closure was for crews to begin rehabilitating bridges and resurfacing between Hendersonville Road and I-26. The price tag on the project is $27.9 million.
