UDOT Opens a New Bridge at Nicholls Road and US 89

Officials from Layton and the Utah Department of Transportation officially opened the new Antelope Drive interchange at US 89

As construction of US 89 through Davis county is nearing completion, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) announced the opening of a new bridge over the highway at Nicholls Road.

The new Nicholls Road bridge is one of six new bridges along the corridor, improving access for drivers to US 89.

For the past 18 months, access to neighborhoods in eastern Davis County has been restricted with various road closures, detours, and lane shifts for the US 89 highway project, the second-largest UDOT project currently underway in Utah.

Restoring community connections along the 9-mile section of the highway helps residents on both sides of U.S. 89 get set around easily and more safely, said UDOT Region One Director Rob Wight.

“It helps us accomplish one of our most important goals for this project: making the local transportation system work better for the people who live and work here,” he said.

Bridge traffic, while open to vehicles and cyclists, remains closed to pedestrians until late December for finishing work on both sides of the bridge.A new frontage road system and three tunnels built under the highway are among changes created by UDOT to improve local accessibility and safer routes for cyclists and pedestrians, connecting them to the east bench and its trails.

The US 89 highway project is scheduled to be complete in late 2023. During this time, crews will be working to finish the Crestwood Road bridge in Kaysville, installation of signage, sidewalks and driveways along with final paving.
