The Mount Vernon Bridge over Interstate 285 reopened Monday morning after a nearly seven-month closure. Construction caused a mess around the bridge as crews worked to get it back up and running in Sandy Springs, Ga.
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) opened I-285 at 9:30 a.m. According to GDOT, there will be limited traffic to start, but people will be able to get across the bridge without a detour.
Last fall the bridge crumpled under the weight of a tractor-trailer incident. A previous assessment in November, 2022 had branded the bridge deck in “fair condition.” The overall structure maintained a “good condition” status.
The bridge’s partial revival has come ahead of schedule thanks to the collaboration between the city of Sandy Springs and Archer Western Construction. The retrofit is not yet whole, however. Drivers will have to drive a narrow path with only one lane open currently.
Crews are putting the final touches onto the project. The crews will be focusing on putting in sidewalks and multi-use paths for pedestrians. Pedestrian facilities are set to open at a later date.
