Five years ago, Freedom Road Bridge in Century, Fla. closed as it was deemed unsafe. Now, Century Interim Mayor Alicia Johnson said the bridge will be completely replaced.
Construction on the structure is expected to begin in May. Century received approximately $1.3 million to replace the bridge, but has been delayed waiting for a permit from the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers.
"The funds came from a legislative appropriation," Johnson said. "And it is a very big deal for the citizens in the town."
The design and permitting process for the bridge is 90% complete, according to town officials.
The original road was closed in Jan. 2020 due to unsafe and deteriorating conditions.
The new bridge will make it easier to access vital resources in the community, according to Johnson.
The project is expected to be completed in February 2026.
