An investigation is underway after a fire erupted at a construction site along Loop 1604 and Interstate 10 on Nov. 14, according to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). Officials said the small fire occurred around 2 p.m.
Firefighters responded to a stand-alone incident and found an under-construction beam engulfed in flames. Construction materials on the top of the beam were burning. The fire was contained quickly with no injuries reported, according to the San Antonio Fire Department.
TxDOT spokesperson Jennifer Serold said the fire didn't affect traffic and will not have an immediate impact on the construction schedule. Serold said an investigation is ongoing and an assessment to identify potential damage is underway.
Officials have not released further details on what caused the fire at the site.
TxDOT is working on a Loop 1604 North expansion project that will be under construction through 2028, with work occurring throughout the entire corridor. The project was planned in six segments that are all under construction at this time.
One of the improvements of the project will expand 1604 from a four-lane expressway to a 10-lane expressway with the addition of two general-purpose lanes in each direction.
TxDOT also aims to add one high-occupancy vehicle lane in each direction and reconfigure the layout of auxiliary lanes and entrance and exit ramps.
