A project aimed at improving congestion and safety on a southern Indiana interstate is expected to start in the coming years.
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) said its Improve 64 project, on Interstate 64 in Floyd County, is expected to begin in early 2026.
The project has been in the works since 2022, and several public meetings have been held to give the community a chance to look at and weigh in on the plans.
The aim is to reduce congestion and improve safety and mobility on the interstate in an effort to enhance the "overall travel experience along the corridor” according to Improve 64’s official website. The corridor is between Cherry Street in New Albany and U.S. 150 in both directions.
“The work will add travel lanes and interchange improvements to reduce congestion and "improve the corridor's operational efficiency," INDOT said.
It also includes bridge and culvert replacements and rehabilitations, noise barriers, new guardrails and concrete barrier walls on portions of I-64, Interstate 265 and U.S. 150.
With construction starting in 2026, re-construction activities are scheduled and letting is planned for November 2025. Project planning is underway with the project team analyzing alternatives and reviewing potential environmental impacts.
The project is expected to be substantially complete by late 2029.
