TxDOT Begins Major Closures for White Oak Bayou Elevation Project

Jan. 9, 2025
Phase one includes Studemont Bridge demolition and ramps closure to raise I-10 above floodplain

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) began closing parts of the Katy Freeway last night as crews start phase one of the White Oak Bayou Elevation Project.

The closures will allow for the demolition of the Studemont Street Bridge, according to TxDOT.

The Katy Freeway westbound Taylor Street exit and entrance ramp will be closed for the duration of the project. From today until Monday, the Katy Freeway westbound Studemont Street entrance ramp will be closed.

The goal of the project is to raise a nearly two-mile stretch of Interstate 10 from Heights Boulevard to Interstate 45 above the floodplain. The area has forced the closure of the interstate 10 times in the last 30 years after major rain events.

The plan will add a 26-acre detention pond underneath it and remove 18 acres of concrete currently at the site while also contributing to the roadway's natural development.

Construction will take approximately four years to complete.
