Residents of Level Plains, Ala. and state officials are working to improve safety along U.S. Highway 84, a roadway known for its high number of accidents in Coffee and Dale Counties.
The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) recently hosted a public engagement session to hear community concerns and share proposed safety measures. Among the attendees was Cornelius Burrow, Level Plains Councilman, who recalled a serious accident at the intersection of Coffee County Road 709 and Highway 84.
“[The accident] knocked me off the road, totaled my vehicle,” Burrow said. “We are just really happy something is being done to prevent this from happening again.”
ALDOT’s proposed plan includes installing concrete islands in the median between County Road 709 and County Road 1 to restrict dangerous turns. Additionally, U-turn lanes will be added to facilitate safer crossings.
Ronnie Thompson, Level Plains Mayor, supports the project, emphasizing its impact on traffic safety in a statement to WTVY News.
“When you come off 709 or 445, you’ll have to go east, turn back, and then head west,” Thompson said. “This will prevent people from crossing over directly. I think it’s a good thing.”
ALDOT’s safety enhancements, coupled with increased police presence, aim to reduce accidents. The construction projects are expected to begin by late summer or early fall.
