Florida looks to create authority overseeing AVs, alternative transportation
Dec. 12, 2017
The legislation that would establish the authority will be considered by state lawmakers in 2018
Lawmakers in the state of Florida are proposing the creation of a “Statewide Alternative Transportation Authority” that would oversee developing transportation systems for things such as autonomous vehicles.
The authority would be within the Florida Department of Transportation and would receive $60 million beginning in the 2021-2022 fiscal year, according to the state’s House and Senate proposals.
Florida's House Transportation & Infrastructure Subcommittee last week approved the House version (HB 535) of the proposal, and the Senate version (SB 1200) was filed on Friday. The bills will be considered during the 2018 legislative session, which starts Jan. 9.
