A North Carolina construction worker was hit and killed in a work zone on Interstate 40 in Raleigh, according to the State Highway Patrol.
The worker removed a lane closure sign from the highway median, and while crossing to his truck, he was hit. The work was completed for the night and the lanes ahead were open.
The victim worked for Stay Alert Safety Services, a subcontractor for S.T. Wooten. The company has been widening a 13-mile stretch of I-40 south of the Beltline.
The crash occurred around 3:50 a.m. near the U.S. Route 70 Business interchange in Garner. The victim was wearing a reflective vest and his truck’s warning lights were flashing, according to the State Highway Patrol.
He was hit by one car and thrown to the pavement where he was hit by a second car. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Neither driver is believed to have been speeding or impaired. The crash remains under investigation.
North Carolina saw 7,523 work zone crashes in 2023, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). That increased from 6,258 in 2022.
