As spring ushers in another season of road construction, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) and Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA) have launched a statewide campaign to promote work zone safety.
The initiative, themed "Play Your Part," runs throughout April and encourages drivers to stay alert and cautious in work zones.
Tim Gatz, ODOT executive director will officially launch the campaign at the April Transportation Commission meeting by reading a proclamation from Gov. Kevin Stitt, declaring April 21-25 as Oklahoma Work Zone Awareness Week.
The campaign includes new public service announcements and statewide events emphasizing the importance of safe driving in construction zones.
“With over 100 active work zones across Oklahoma this summer, our goal is to make roads safer for everyone,” Gatz said. “Through awareness and teamwork, we can all make it home safely.”
The campaign is particularly meaningful following the tragic death of ODOT worker Jaden Jackson last December, according to ODOT. Since its inception, 73 ODOT and OTA employees have lost their lives in work zones.
Key events include a student safety day, a Thunder basketball game night and an orange-lit tribute at Oklahoma landmarks. The public can show support by wearing orange on April 15 and participating in social media initiatives.
